Harlaw Hydro is go! Inspiration for community energy generation

Something special happened in the Pentland Hills, by Balerno just outside Edinburgh on 3 September 2014.The Golden Spade event celebrated the beginning of the building work for Harlaw Hydro.

Balerno Village Trust and Lord Provost all set to cut the first turf

Harlaw Hydro will be Scotland’s first community-owned, debt-free hydro electricity generation site, and yes, it’s definitely happening! Balerno Village Trust, shareholders and well-wishers gathered at the Water of Leith Visitor Centre for a wee celebration and a short stroll down to the hydro site to watch the first symbolic turf being cut.

Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Donald Wilson did the honours after declaring himself something of a renewables fanatic, and enjoying entertainment from the P3 class at Dean Park Primary.

Congratulations BVT and Harlaw Hydro, and thank you for showing that it can be done!
