Something special happened in the Pentland Hills, by Balerno just outside Edinburgh on 3 September 2014.The Golden Spade event celebrated the beginning of the building work for Harlaw Hydro.Harlaw Hydro will be Scotland’s first community-owned, debt-free hydro electricity generation site, and yes, it’s definitely happening! Balerno Village Trust, shareholders and well-wishers gathered at the Water of Leith Visitor Centre for a wee celebration and a short stroll down to the hydro site to watch the first symbolic turf being cut.
Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Donald Wilson did the honours after declaring himself something of a renewables fanatic, and enjoying entertainment from the P3 class at Dean Park Primary.
Congratulations BVT and Harlaw Hydro, and thank you for showing that it can be done!
